I'm Tracy Gilbert, the Labour Member of Parliament for Edinburgh North and Leith. I was elected in July 2024, and it's an incredible honour to represent a community that means so much to me the place I call home.
I grew up in a Midlothian mining town during the 1980s, where I witnessed first-hand how political decisions can shape lives and communities. Those early experiences grounded my belief in fairness, equality, and the power of collective action. I left school before turning 16 and soon joined Edinburgh City Council through their Youth Training Scheme, and I went on to spend nearly a decade working as a housing benefits officer. That work alongside a variety of voluntary work from Children's Panel to mental health work, youth and drug and alcohol projects, taught me the value of public service and the importance of supporting people with respect and compassion.
Driven by a deep commitment to justice and fairness, I became active in the trade union movement firstly in the public sector as a Unison member then as a trainee organiser for the TUC where I joined USDAW in 2000. I worked with businesses across the private sector to ensure retail and distribution workers had a strong voice and fair conditions. I also contributed to shaping national policy through roles on the Scottish Government’s Retail Strategy, the Scottish Trades Union Congress, and Fair Work Convention.
Now in Parliament, my priority is delivering real change for the people of Edinburgh North and Leith. I believe politics should always be rooted in people’s everyday lives. I’m here to be a voice for our community, to stand up for fairness, and to ensure that no one is left behind.
