Job Title – Communications Officer or Senior Communications Officer
Salary – In line with IPSA Payscale (Communications Officer – Executive 1/ Senior Communications Officer Executive 2), starting salary of £32,000
Location – Leith Constituency Office
Tracy Gilbert MP is recruiting for a Communications Officer to support her work as the Member of Parliament for Edinburgh North and Leith.
The ideal candidate will lead on drafting and developing content, bringing a creative flair to maximise impact and reach. There are three strands of work pertinent to this role:
Digital and Social Media Presence – the successful candidate will be responsible for developing and managing Tracy’s website and social media content.
Constituency Communications and Campaigns – the successful candidate will help play a role in communicating directly with constituents on Tracy’s work in Parliament and across the constituency through letters and leaflets and be responsible for drafting and sending out Tracy’s regular e-newsletter. The successful candidate will also attend some meetings with stakeholders and coordinate follow up actions.
Press – the successful candidate will lead on Tracy’s engagement with journalists by responding to press enquiries and identifying opportunities to promote Tracy’s work through press releases, opinion pieces and articles.
What would success look like in the first year?
- Growing Tracy’s social media outreach by developing a strategy to increase her reach on Facebook and Instagram.
- Bringing a creative flair and being a natural innovator to come up with ideas to make exciting and dynamic social media content.
- Devising and running a successful advertising campaign to double the number of subscribers to Tracy’s E-newsletter.
- Securing press coverage in Scottish, UK and relevant industry publications to further Tracy’s campaigns on tackling violence against women and girls, sex trafficking and international surrogacy.
- Work with Tracy’s Caseworker team to integrate her digital communications and casework output.
Job Description
- Analyse patterns of enquiries and produce reports
- Attend constituency meetings as appropriate
- Critically analyse patterns of enquiries and articulate findings in reports and communication with MP
- Draft responses to constituents
- Ensure records are kept and information managed confidentially in line with data protection.
- Establish, monitor and update a social media and online presence in the constituency.
- Follow up on social media queries and comments
- Gather relevant information to assist with resolving cases
- Manage and monitor social media enquiries, dealing with cases that do not need to be transferred
- Monitor media coverage, liaise with media, prepare press releases as required.
- Produce press releases, liaise with media, meeting deadlines as appropriate.
- Retain records and information confidentially and in line with Data Protection Act
- There may be a requirement for the role holder to work outside of the normal working hours.
- Design and develop engaging, targeted content and messages across a range of channels.
- Ensure online presence is meeting the demands of the constituents, the locality, and the MP.
- Manage the MP’s website contents.
Person Specification
- Experience in communications, public affairs, journalism, marketing, politics and/or communications consulting.
- Experience creating content and adverts for social media, digital channels and email marketing platforms.
- Experience working with national and/or local media.
- Confidence using Microsoft Office.
- Confidence using Canva, Adobe and video editing tools.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Strong organisational skills and attention to detail.
- Ability to manage competing priorities and work independently.
- Strong interpersonal skills.
- Awareness of local and national political issues.
- Sympathetic to the aims and values of Tracy Gilbert MP and the Labour Party
